My Story

Shirley Jackson, and the Jackson Family have been members of East Mt. Zion Baptist Church since the late 1930’s. Her mother, Pearl Jackson was an active member of EMZ. Her sister Geraldine Jackson McSwain is still an active member at this time. Shirley was baptized by Rev. William M. Downs, at EMZ on 100th St. and Cedar. She participated in the march to EMZ at 9990 Euclid Avenue, in November of 1955.

Shirley met the love of her life, Zeddie Coley, and they were married in October of1955, by Rev. William M. Downs.  To this union were born two daughters, Carmaand Cynthia.

Zeddie and Shirley were very active in EMZ. She was the pianist for the Sunday School Primary Department.  Zeddie was in the Brotherhood Chorus, Chairman for the Black History Programs, and was a Trustee for twelve years. 

Zeddie and Shirley’s children participated in the Cradle Roll, with Sister Susie Lee, and Sunday School through twelfth grade. Their daughters were baptized by Rev. William M. Downs.
